Picking and preserving huckleberries from the nearby Blue and Wallowa Mountain ranges is a longtime tradition in northeast Oregon. The flavor-packed wild berries have delighted and nourished Native Americans, pioneers, settlers and modern residents for centuries. Picking the tiny berries takes time and dedication. Residents keep the exact location of their favorite huckleberry patch secret like a fisherman protects his favorite fishing hole. But they are more than willing to share a recipe or let friends and strangers enjoy the delicious fruits of their labor. That is why the organizing committee of the North Powder Huckleberry Festival in North Powder, Oregon has published a cookbook of over 150 huckleberry recipes. The books sell for $8 (plus $3 postage if you want it mailed). It can be ordered by contacting Laura Dougherty, gandl97867@gmail.com or calling Jackie, 541-898-2547. You can also purchase a copy at the festival July 25 or at the Union County Tourism office and Visitor Center, 102 Elm Street, downtown La Grande, 800.848.9969.
