A typical spring day in Union County can be full of surprises. This morning, as I enjoyed my lovely drive to work in La Grande from North Powder, via Union, I was blinded by sunshine, pelted with hale, splashed by wet snow and washed clean by rain. Fortunately, my car protected me from it all and I got to just watch nature's production. I thought about the pioneers who traveled through here in covered wagons on the Oregon Trail over 150 years ago and realized how fortunate I am to have today's conveniences and comforts while living in a place that is still just as beautiful, and fickle, as it was long ago.
When driving through the historic town of Union, I tried to see it through a visitor's eyes and delighted in what I saw. Lots of wonderful historic buildings, fun little stores and restaurants, a beautiful historic hotel, www.theunionhotel.com, two bed and breakfast inns, and friendly residents, visiting and laughing about the weather. Residents are anxious to tell the world about the little town they love.
Union is home to the wonderful Union County Museum, a real gem, with its Cowboys Then & Now Exhibit, agriculture and timber history displays, history of each Union County community, and rooms decorated in antiques from the late nineteenth century. They opened their new outdoor Livery Station exhibit last Sunday.
Union has the Buffalo Peak Golf Course, www.buffalopeakgolf.com, a links-style course that hugs the slope of the hill southeast of town. The course is very popular with those who have had the opportunity to play there and it is awaiting discovery by people who haven't yet experienced its challenging and fun terrain.
The people of Union can also tell visitors about lovely Catherine Creek State Park, just a few scenic miles up the stream that tumbles through the heart of town. They will talk about the century-old Eastern Oregon Livestock Show & PRCA Rodeo, which happens June 8-14 this year.
I glanced at the greenhouse full of plants at Bare's Hardware (so much more than a hardware store!), then stopped at Aggie's for a cup of espresso and look at the antiques, gifts and decor items on display. Aggie's is right next door to the hotel and across the street from the popular Gravy Dave's drive-in.
There's much more to see and do in the area. Go to www.visitlagrande.com to plan your visit.
