Are you are among the millions of people who enjoy a frightening experience, when they know it is all just for fun? Then head for Union, Oregon, for the Union Harvest Festival & Night Fright. Union is located in the northeast corner of the state, near La Grande. The charming little town has turned Halloween into a good time for every age. Most popular among the activities is a trip through the Night Fright Haunted House, set up in the Historic Union Hotel, www.theunionhotel.com. This wonderfully restored 1920s hotel is the perfect setting for the annual haunting that follows a new story line each year and involves actors from the community and from the award-winning Eastern Oregon University drama department. Director Jeri Mackley begins the creative process in the spring, putting together every detail of the production. Promoted as "scary not gory," the production still causes a chill. Evening performances are not recommended for children under 8, and under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. For the youngsters, two less-scary matinee performances are offered. This year, the title is, "What Lies In Darklore Manor?" Shiver!
To learn more about Night Fright, go to www.nightfrightevents.com. Last weekend was the opening for the season. Remaining performances are October 17-18, 24-25, 29-31, and November 1. Evening performances are 7 to 10 p.m., except Halloween, which opens at 6 p.m. Matinee performances are on October 18 and 25, 3 to 5 p.m.
In addition to the Night Fright Haunted House, on October 25, Union Harvest Festival activities include a Halloween Costume Contest, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m.; the Harvest Festival Parade at noon, Outdoor Cooking Contest, sponsored by Ed Staub & Sons, at the EOLS grounds; Monster Movies from 2-4 p.m., at the EOLS Clubhouse, and horse-drawn wagon rides. Another popular activity is Punkin' Chunkin, which takes place in the EOLS arena. Can pumpkins fly? You betcha!
